Micellar Water
What is micellar water?
Micellar water is “fancy water” with scientific perks. Micellar water has been described as a miniature sponge, mopping up dirt and makeup while hydrating your skin. Micelles have an oil-loving ‘tail’ that traps dirt, oil, and makeup and a water-loving ‘head’ that allows the micelles to dissolve impurities so they can easily be wiped away.
It is known for providing a deep cleanse while eliminating impurities that exist in the skin and also makeup residues. Micellar water is a gentle cleansing option which helps lift off makeup, oil, and dirt from your skin with minimal rubbing which minimizes dryness and irritation of the skin.
How did Micellar water originate?
Micellar water is fast becoming the ‘must-have, go-to’ alternative for facial cleansing but this ‘fancy water’ was actually created in 1995 by French skincare company, BIODERMA. Working alongside dermatologists, Bioderma developed a now global product that was suited to the natural biology of the skin.
What does Micellar water do & its characteristics?
Micellar water lifts impurities from your pores like a magnet. It is non-abrasive, hydrating, and easy to use. Micellar water is a cleaning action, non-rinse single step product. Make-up removal routines became shorter and more efficient.
Aphanothece sacrum is a highly valuable plant that can only live in special regions where the water is pristine and flows slowly. “Sacran”, is a polysaccharide isolated from Aphanothece sacrum alga. It forms a gel-like film containing water which resists penetration by water and chemicals. This unique physical characteristic acts as an artificial barrier. Additional features of ‘sacran’ :
- Moisturizing effect – higher moisture retention capacity compared to hyaluronic acid
- Protective membrane formation – Functions as an artificial barrier to protect skin from external stimulus
- Anti-inflammatory effect

How to Use Micellar for Face, Eyes, Cleanser & Toner
- Makeup remover for faces: Soak a cotton pad in Micellar water or foam and gently apply where you have makeup using it like you would a regular makeup remover, don’t rinse and then follow with your favourite cleanser.
- Makeup remover for eyes: Dampen a cotton pad and press onto the eye area for a few seconds to help loosen the makeup before you sweep it away.
- As a cleanser: Dampen a cotton pad and gently wipe over your face, like a toner—no rinsing, just continue with your skincare routine.
- As a toner: Start by using a gentle cleanser on your face. Then, pour some micellar water into your hands and pat the formula into the skin.
