What are fake tans?
Fake tanning is highly popular these days. It is the process of making your skin darker with different tanning products and services such as using tanning sprays, lotions, butter etc that add temporary colour to your skin giving you a natural glow.
How does fake tanning work?
When you apply fake tan, the active ingredient DHA reacts with the amino acids in the dead layer of your skin cells to temporarily darken them. The DHA isn’t actually absorbed into your skin, which is why fake tans only last for a few days. DHA is a safe and effective way to achieve a temporary bronzed look, but it’s important to remember that it doesn’t offer any sun protection. Fake tan can be applied in a number of ways, including sprays, gels, lotions, and wipes. If you’re using a self-tanning product for the first time, it’s best to start with a gradual tanner that will build up over time. For best results, exfoliate your skin before applying fake tan and be sure to smooth on the product evenly. After applying fake tan, avoid getting wet or sweating for at least eight hours while the DHA develops on your skin.
How to apply tanning lotion and oil
If you’re looking for that perfect sun-kissed glow, tanning lotion can help you achieve it. But how do you apply tanning lotion? Here’s a step-by-step guide:
- Start with clean, exfoliated skin. This will help the tanning lotion to evenly distribute and absorb into your skin.
- Apply a liberal amount of tanning lotion to your body, using long, smooth strokes. Be sure to cover all areas that you want to tan.
- Use a tanning mitt or your hands to blend the tanning lotion into your skin. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly afterwards so that the tanner doesn’t stain them.
- Allow the tanning lotion to dry completely before getting dressed. If you’re going outside, put on sunscreen as well to protect your skin from UV rays.
- Reapply tanning lotion to maintain your desired level of tanning. Our Gradual Tan Lotion builds your tan gradually after every use.Â

Applying a tanning oil consists of similar steps: Just apply evenly to clean skin, massage, and lay down in the sun to let your tan build up. Our Minetan Luxe Oil comes with a 1-hour express tan quality that gives you a beautiful bronze skin faster than most products. For the best tan, always apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher first, then follow with tanning oil to help speed up the process.
What does tanning oil do?
Tanning oil is any oil used to accelerate tanning. These oils protect the skin from UV radiation to achieve an even tan, and promote tanning. The main active ingredient in these oils is para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (EHMC) and benzophenone-3 are also used in some products. PABA provides about 98% of the UVB absorption with a SPF of 15. EHMC provides about 7% of the UVB protection with a SPF of 2-5. Benzophenone-3 provides about 6% of the UVB protection with a SPF of 4.Â
They are applied to the skin before exposure to the sun or tanning bed.
How to remove tanning from face?
Although many people tan their skin to achieve a golden glow, sometimes the tan can become too dark or uneven. If you are looking to remove a face tan, there are a few different methods you can try. One option is to use a tan removing cream or lotion that contains bleach or other lightening agents. Our Black Magic Tan Remover is gentle and effective to fade out a dark tan. You can also use a gentle tan-removing exfoliator to slough off dead skin cells and improve the overall appearance of your complexion, but don’t get harsh on your skin. Don’t forget to moisturise your skin to prevent further tanning and keep your skin healthy and hydrated. With a little care and effort, you can easily remove a face tan and restore your natural skin tone.
Are fake tanning products safe?
The general findings so far suggest that fake tanning products are in fact safer than unprotected sun exposure, which makes them a much more preferable and convenient option. The strength and duration of the tanning process and its results vary from product to product making it an ideal method for beginners to start from gradual tanners to rapid ones. So, if you ensure to follow the product’s instructions precisely and do a patch test before use, it should be safe for you to use fake tanning products.
How to avoid patchy tanning results?
Fake tanning products work only as good as your application technique. If you do not follow the instructions or miss out any areas on your skin, your tan may come out as patchy or streaky. It is a common mistake and can happen easily especially if you are a beginner. However, you can avoid this problem by taking a few precautions, like exfoliating your skin with Azure Tan Smooth & Remove Tan Exfoliating Scrub well before applying the tanner. This scrub also removes any previous tan that is remaining on your skin, especially if you already have a patchy tan from a previous application. Also make sure that your skin is hair-free to prep the skin for even application. Then, focus on applying the tanner as directed in an even layer to avoid dark or light patches.
How long does fake tanning take to develop?
Tanning products like lotions and sprays have different times depending on their ingredients (from instant to gradual buildup). Fake tan can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to develop, depending on the product you use and how dark you want your tan to be. Most fake tans will show some color within about an hour, but it can take up to 24 hours. However, this can vary depending on the product you use, as well as your skin type. On dry skin, it may take longer for the fake tan to develop. In general, it’s best to wait at least four hours before showering or swimming, as this will give the fake tan time to set properly. After showering or swimming, you may notice that your fake tan has faded slightly. This is perfectly normal – simply reapply as necessary to maintain your desired level of bronzed skin.
